From colonial times through the turn of the twentieth century, maps encourages Euro-Americans to see the West as a land of promise. Maps offered visual representations of a nation destined to expand across the continent to the Pacific Ocean. Chicago emerges first as a dot on these maps, subsequently becoming a bustling metropolis, and then a major center of cartographic production. The exhibition draws on the Newberry library's superb collections of historic maps and Western Americana.
